An adventure in America

It's starting to feel like I'm spending more time in airports than I do in the office! I've taken a week off to explore Washington DC and New York with three friends. They think we're going shopping and bar-hopping (which of course we will be), but I also have a few horticultural highlights to hunt out while I'm in the United States.
Top of my itinerary wish list was the White House vegetable garden, but sadly even our Embassy couldn't pull that off. Michelle Obama's garden is private (although hopefully I can still get a glimpse of it through the fence).
I am looking forward to a tour of the green roofs of Washington though. The American Society of Landscape Architects lets you poke about on top of their roof for free. And also in Washington, it's water lily season at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens so it would be a shame not to stop in to admire all the lotus in bloom.
Then in New York I'll definitely be checking out the city's newest park: The Highline. The High Line was originally constructed in the 1930s as a railway line to get freight trains off Manhattan's streets. No longer used, it is being gradually converted into a park. Designer Piet Oudolf did the planting design and it looks amazing. Check it out at www.thehighline.org. And after a stroll across the skyline? I think I'll have earned my first cosmopolitan cocktail...
