I never thought I'd say it but I'm actually feeling sun fatigue. And I'm sure I'll live to regret this... but I'm actually glad it's raining. I hope it buckets down all night. And all day tomorrow. And all day the next... (largely because I'm off to the Melbourne Flower Show in the morning to see what's hot in garden design across the ditch in '08. Last year it was blue-dyed bark mulch (yikes) and fake plastic green (double yikes)...)
My garden isn't too parched despite the long hot summer, because (a) it's quite shady and (b) I decided in December that my Christmas present to myself was going to be a big fat bill from Metrowater. (When you're trying to establish new trees and shrubs, a constant supply of water is a must.) But even so, nothing beats a natural shower. And fingers crossed that all this water will help to wash all the mushy figs and bird poo off my deck. The waxeyes and blackbirds have had a fig feeding frenzy this summer. And the sods scoffed all the pears too.

Watch us on Sunrise every Thursday morning at 8.20am
As part of our 2008 Get Growing campaign, we're aiming to teach 10,000 Kiwis how to grow their own food... starting with our very own Get Growing "guinea pig" gardener Phil Bostwick. In February we helped Phil - better known as a groovy young TV presenter on the C4 music channel - put in two raised beds, and every Thursday morning at 8.20am we head back to his backyard to check how his garden is growing.
If you want to watch Phil's garden grow from scratch, you can follow the links below to the video archive at TV3.

Thursday February 28: It is all very well growing your own vegetables, but really there are only so many tomatoes you can eat before you feel like you are turning into one. So what do you do with excess vegetables and fruit? Heaps, according to Sunrise gardening expert Lynda Hallinan, who reminds about the old fashioned art of pickling and preserving. To watch the video, click here.
