I think I'm suffering from rain rage. I am sooooo uttterly stinking irritated by the endless puddles, the miserable mud and the spud-mauling frosts. Optimism has deserted me. The glass isn't half full... it's damn well overflowing all over the place!!!
So, in the interests of at least trying to put on a brave face, I put on my gumboots after work tonight and went for a wander in search of signs of spring. And here they are:
1. The pot of 'Tete e tete' daffodils I bought two years ago from Eden Gardens is flowering again. Three blooms so far and at least a dozen still to come. This is marvellous. And miraculous, given that I haven't fed, watered or even talked to them in all that time.
2. My elderberries are budding up and a few of the branches are even flowering. (Dad brought his chainsaw up last weekend and we gave one of my elderberries a savage haircut. I took about two dozen cuttings, as I'd like to chop the old ones down but replant an elderberry hedge where the privet currently reigns out the back.
3. Three years after I planted them, I've finally staked the four standard 'Meyer' lemon trees in my potager.
4. Don't tell the council, but I've planted an 'Italian' prune plum and a double grafted pear tree on the street verge.
5. My dwarf 'Garden Prince' almond has four pink blossoms on it.
6. My 'Emerald' kohlrabi and 'Di Toscana' Italian kale have germinated. And so have my 'Kaleidoscope' sweet peas, 'Mahogany' nasturtiums and black popcorn. (Sowing corn this early is suicidal but I'm praying for global warming to kick in before I need to transplant my seedlings in a month or so.)
7. My hydrangeas are unfurling new leaves.
8. My garden appears to be hosting a convention of wax eyes.
9. My loquat trees are LADEN with small green fruit. Six weeks from now, I'll be eating juicy, apricot-sized loquats.
10. I found about 20,000 deviously destructive snails sheltering in the mondo grass edging along the side of my lawn... and I smashed the lot of them to smithereens with my gumboots. Revenge is sweet!

I'm glad you've found happiness in the rain! :-)
The whole flooding the garden thing is doing my head in! I'm in the South Island and I'm sick of digging snow and puddles from out about my plants....!
there are quite a few signs of spring once you look for them...even down here in mountains. The plum tree is starting to blossum, the crocuses are out, and best of all my husband has nearly finished my new raised beds...roll on spring
