Dig for Victory!

It's official: Vege gardening's back in global fashion, thanks largely to the combined effect of rising food and petrol prices. Of course, as the editor of a gardening magazine I could say "I told you so", but if you think I'm a little biased... check out these stories from the Christian Science Monitor, The Observer, The Reading Eagle, The St. Louis Dispatch, The Dutch News, the Dodge City Daily Globe, the Connecticut Post and The Guardian. All these stories were published in the last couple of days. I predict a run on radish seeds...

Who was it that said "every cloud has a silver lining"? Happily, it seems to be true in this case.

Gardening is the new golf. I love that! It's certainly cheaper. And you don't have to wear silly shoes.

I predict gardening will be the new "gym" by the end of the year too... here's hoping anyway!

Hi just a quick question we are digging up one of the sandpits at Raumati South school to create a veg garden. Can we put fruit scraps (we create a bin full a day!) and raked up autumn leaves in along with the compost in layers?

Hi Diane,

You sure can, although keep in mind that if you put in too much 'wet' stuff (fruit and vege scraps, lawn clippings etc) and not enough 'dry' stuff (twigs, leaves, hay, shredded cardboard) then you could end up with an anaerobic stinky mess under the layers of compost and soil. I'd suggest composting it all down first separately before you dig it into the actual bed.

Good luck!

Hell how bad is this! I end up having to leave a comment in a vegetable gardens post just to post with a fellow NZ Garden blog. Are there so little garden blogs in New Zealand????.My interest in Heritage Irises in New Zealand. Perhaps NZ Gardener could post a feature about how to set up a Garden Blog. They can become a great knowledge bank
